Hampton Roads' original hot yoga studio, Hot Yoga Studio of Virginia Beach, opened its doors in February of 2003 as the first and only hot yoga studio between Richmond and Raleigh. Since that time, nearly 3,000 area men, women and children have been introduced to the practice.

Where did it all begin?

Yoga itself was developed over 2,000 years ago by monks in India who found that their physical bodies interfered with their spiritual meditation. It's difficult to stay focused when your back hurts and your legs fall asleep!  So, in an effort to advance their spiritual lives, a series of asanas (postures) was developed to help the monks transcend the physical and concentrate on the spiritual.

What are the benefits?

Today, and particularly in our western culture, yoga is primarily practiced for its many and varied physical benefits. A regular yoga practice improves strength, flexibility and balance.  It also helps to regulate metabolism and hormones while improving circulation.

Practitioners find that regular practice also improves focus and stamina, and relieves stress. In fact, more and more physicians are realizing the virtues of yoga and recommending yoga as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Why the heat?

Adding heat was the brainchild of Bikram Choudry of Calcutta, India. It's not unusual for temperatures to reach 120° F there and Choudry realized that the heat was actually an asset. It allows one to stretch safely and detoxifies the body through perspiration.

What type of yoga is practiced at Hot Yoga Studio?

Hatha is probably the most widely know form of yoga and what is practiced at Hot Yoga. There are several asanas (postures,) however, that are unique to our lineage having to do with alignment and compression. Compression asanas massage and compress internal organs delivering a rich flush of freshly oxygenated blood upon their release. These asanas in particular are considered very healing.

What should I expect?

Your first class is typically the most challenging regardless of what physical shape you are in. You work hard, everything is new, the body is detoxifying, and the heat can be tiring. But keep heart!  Most new students claim a great feeling of well-being after just one class. Usually by the third class, they are hooked on the practice of hot yoga.  Unlike other forms of physical conditioning, yoga can be practiced every day. The more often you practice, in fact, the more your body will open up and strengthen while allowing you to reap the many benefits of your efforts.

How should I prepare?

Drink plenty of water before class and try not to eat anything more than a light snack for two-hours before practice. Bring water, a mat, and a towel. If you do forget any of those items, don't worry. We have a vending machine for water and Powerade, towels are $1, and mats are available for loan.

Dress in light comfortable clothing. Men usually wear running or board shorts along with a tank top or they go shirtless. No socks, and personal items should be left outside of the studio. Lockers are available for your personal belongings, but bring your own lock if needed.

What about classes for the beginner?

All levels practice together. An advanced practitioner is usually so focused on their own practice that he or she is nearly unaware of what is happening around them. For the beginner, plenty of verbal instruction is given, but if you are uncertain as to what to do, a quick peek at the more experienced practitioner in the class will clear things up.

What classes do you offer?

Hot Yoga:  A series of 26 to 30 postures practiced in a heated environment in order to warm muscles, soothe joints, and detoxify through the process of sweating. Prepare by drinking plenty of water and dressing in light clothing.  (90 minutes)

Vinyasa:  This series is considered a "flow" as we move through the postures in a constant rhythm with resting time in traditional sun salutation postures. The room is moderately heated, the workout is more cardiovascular, and it combines upper body strength with flexibility designed for students of all levels.  Come prepared to sweat from sheer work!  (90 minutes)

Not Hot Yoga:  For those who are uncomfortable with the heat, have injuries, or are pregnant. This series presents the typical "Hot Yoga" postures with a few additions all set to music in low to moderate heat and with modifications based on individual needs.  (90 minutes)

Hot Hatha: This class incorporates postures from various disciplines of yoga.  Typically, it's a combination of a flow class and traditional yoga postures.  This is a great class for combining the increased cardiovascular benefits of a vinyasa practice with the more strengthening moves of traditional yoga and suitable for all levels.  (90 minutes)

How do I get started?

Come to class 15-minutes prior to its beginning to register and get settled in the studio. No need to pre-register. Everyone is welcome. We recommend that you start with a regular hot yoga class to get familiar with the asanas (postures) and accustomed to the heat. You might even prefer to begin with a not hot yoga class, particularly if you are uncertain about the heat or amount of physical energy needed to make it through a class.

Other than that, just come with an open mind and a willing heart.  Yoga will change your life...........for the better.
